A Milestone and a Giveaway

Welcome to my 500th published blog post. Yes–you read that correctly. This is my 500th post.

Pretty amazing, huh? To be honest, I am just as surprised as you are. It sort of snuck up on me kind of like the waitresses at Shoney’s. My theory on how Shoney’s waitresses are so ninja quiet–it’s the shoes.

I started this  blog way back on June 6, 2007. For about 3 years and four months I was a sporadic blogger. I would write a few days in a row and then take a couple of weeks off. And then, almost exactly one year ago on October 20, 2010, I decided that I really like to write and that I wanted to post a new blog every weekday.

All that has led me here–#500.

For those of you who have been here for all or part of this ride–THANK YOU! It has been great getting to know you and grow with you.

To express my gratitude for what you mean to me, I have decided to do a BIG BLOG GIVEAWAY!

There is just one problem–I don’t have much money budgeted for a giveaway. Thankfully even with that impediment, I was able to come up with some great prizes.

Here are a few things you could win:

1. A trip to Dollywood with me! You will have to pay for your own way there and your own food and lodging and your own ticket. But if you make it there, I promise to go with you. As long as I still have my season pass and it’s on a day that is convenient for me and it’s not too hot or too cold or too windy.

2. A haircut. All you have to do is get to me. I’ll supply to bowl and the scissors.

3. One of my wife’s goats*. Your pick. *subject to my wife’s approval*. *she’s probably not going to approve.

4. A song by me at your wedding. Or your funeral if you are already married. All you have to do is pay for all of my expenses and I’m there. I hope you like “Rocky Top.”

5. A five kid fun-day. You can take all 5 of my kids on a child-appropriate outing of your choosing. We promise to make it extra exciting for you by pouring sugar and caffeine into their little systems for a week prior to the special day.

6. A warm, fuzzy feeling. Everyone knows that it is far better to give than to receive. So I’ll give you an opportunity to enjoy the “far better” by letting you give me money. As much as you want!

There are 3 ways to enter. You can do one, two, or all three! Here they are:

1. Leave a comment with the answer to this question: What other inexpensive (free) prizes could I offer on my 1,000th post?

2. Share this post on Twitter!

3. Share this post on Facebook!

The winners will be chosen using the patented Seekingpastor Selection System (S3) and announced on Friday!

Have fun and good luck (even though I don’t really believe in luck)!

And thanks again for reading. You all really are important to me!

********************UPDATE!!!!!**********************

After using the patented Seekingpastor Selection System (S3) that involved putting names on pieces of paper in a red plastic cup and drawing them out, I now have the winners to the giveaway!

The winner of a trip to Dollywood with me as long as he is able to pay for all of his own expenses and it is a perfect, convenient day for me is…..TONY!!!!!!

The winner of haircut administered by me with a bowl and scissors is……KRISTIN!!!!!!

The winner of one of my wife’s goats is…….BILL!!!!! (Sorry, Bill. My wife did not approve).

The winner of a song by me at his wedding/funeral  as long as my expenses are paid is…….MOE!!!! I might even do the unthinkable and wear a New York Yankees hat while doing it.

The winner of the 5-kid fun day is……ROB!!!!!

The winner of a warm, fuzzy feeling by virtue of giving me money is….DUSTIN!!!!! Think big, my friend.

Many thanks to all who entered! If you didn’t win–Sorry. I’ll do it again in 500 more posts.

  1. I accept. Not saying which one but I accept. You pick but subject to my approval. Congrats on the milestone matt. Keep up the good writing. I would say humor but people would think I am kidding and trying to take your job. 🙂

    • Thanks, Bill. Been a pleasure to get to know you in the interwebs. Hope to get up with you at some point–seems like we try but are always rendered unable. Someday–maybe 🙂

  2. Congrats on 500! You could give away a free guest post, a virtual high five, other people’s money, the shirt off your back, and someone else’s cell phone number. If you give away the number make sure you include a message like “for a free xbox call…”

  3. Wow! Congrats on number 500. I just hit my 500th this past Friday. We must be on a similar schedule. I didn’t have all the “great” prizes to give away for my 500th, but I did offer my readers some great inspirational thoughts from Arny Sanchez.

    Keep on blogging!!!

  4. I really want the goat. I don’t want to bring it home (I have two children, and they are similar). I just want to know that somewhere, living with someone, is a goat that mine.

You could offer to “bless” items, through the internet. Say a pray over their morning coffee, toothbrush (pray away the decay), and toilet paper. I don’t know why, but a toothbrush supercharged with prayer seems like a good choice.

  5. congrats Matt!

    Lets see….hmmm…

on your 1000th’s post…you could throw a huge party for us!!!! ALL of us!!!!

    Expensive? NOOOOOO Way!!!!

You could did it live with live web chat cam! We could all see each other!

  7. I want a goat, but only if I can ride it through the streets of New York.

Congrats on the big milestone. I just burped in your honor!

    • I’m sure that’s no weirder than what is usually seen going down the streets there.
Thanks for the burp. It will be cherished always.

  8. Congrats on reaching 500 posts Matt! You’re well on your way to epic-ness.

As for a prize, I’m with Herdy on this one – I want the goat, but I don’t want to bring it home or take care of it. I just want to say I own a goat. Your wife can keep it and look after it. See – best solution for everyone!

  9. Wow, 500 is awesomesauce! Congrats man. I’m so glad you decided to write consistently because I love reading your stuff.

You could shave your head and offer the winner the hair picked up off the floor. Put it in a ziplock and preserve it for generations.

Oh and if I win, I would like the bowl cut.

  10. A bear sightseeing excursion to Cade’s Cove…
    A guided hike up to clingman’s dome…
A pair of worn out sneakers…
Your Michael Jackson replica sequined glove… if you don’t have one, your 5 children could do an art project and create one on the cheap….

Me… I’d settle for meeting up in Chattanooga for dinner.

  11. Congrats on the 500th post, man. Our lives are better because you’ve invested yourself into it with this blog.

As for the contest…and something free….it’s easy. You give someone the chance to win a guest posting opportunity here.

  12. Since you don’t have a budget for your giveaway, I hereby offer a guest spot on my blog–to you, and to any of your readers who take me up on it. For reals.

    🙂

  13. Congrats on 500! That’s monumental… and a lot of creative energy. Surprised you have any left after making and caring for 5 kids and goats… or are the 5 kids the goat kind?

For your 1000 post you could give away the toenail clippings in the aluminum can. See how I did that? Tying together this post with your previous one :).
I love how you get the most hilarious comments. All your commenters have my husband and I giggling like children.

    • Nice tie in–that is ninja-level commenting right there. Yeah–the comments are usually funnier than my posts, but I’m completely cool with that 🙂
As for making 5 young’uns, we really just made one. We adopted the first four when we thought we couldn’t get pregnant and then….got pregnant. God’s sense of humor on display again.

  14. Congrats on 500…that’s awesome!

I love the idea of a bowl cut. Hope I win!

Also love the idea of a guest post. That’s fantastic.

    Looking forward to 500 more!
