Forrest Gump famously said, “Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.”
I guess this quote is mostly true. However, “a box of chocolates” isn’t the only thing that would have fit this particular saying.
Life is like a McDonald’s drive-thru order; you never know what you’re gonna get. There are limits to this one. You don’t get food from somewhere like Burger King or Zaxby’s. Normally.
Life is like receiving a gift from your semi-crazy relative (you know the one); you never know what you’re gonna get. It could be something nice or it could be a Big Mouth Billy Bass. If you’ve never gotten one of those for Christmas, then you weren’t in my immediate family 14 years ago. And if you were in my immediate family back then, once again–you’re welcome.
Life is like going to a livestock auction; you never know what you’re gonna get. I went to a few of these back when we had goats. If you’ve never been to one just imagine the most awkward dinner party you’ve ever been to, but with goats, cows, and horses thrown in.
I could have also added that life is like following Jesus; you never know what you’re gonna get.
The reason I didn’t add that one is, for Christians, life isn’t like following Jesus. Life IS following Jesus.
Yet, it is true. As we follow Jesus we never know what we’re gonna get. Sort of.
We don’t know all the twists and turns that will be on our journey. We don’t know the type of pain we may have to endure. We don’t know how far He may send us away from family, friends, and everything we consider normal.
But in the end we do know what we’re gonna get.
To be in the presence of Jesus.
I don’t know what all I will get on my journey of following the Savior, but I do know what I will get at the end…
Heaven and all that goes with it.
I’ll gladly take all the uncertainty of this world for the great certainty of the World to Come.
What other phrase would fit in Forrest Gump’s quote? What are you looking forward to most about Heaven?
